Government In Atlanta. Government Walk. Atlanta is a center for many levels of government - city county, state, and federal. Government buildings are linked by a corridor that extends along two parallel streets - Mitchell Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive - from the State Capitol to the Richard B. Russelle Federal Building. The Gothic Revival styled City Hall on Mitchell Street, designed by G. Lloyd Preacher, was completed in 1930 with materials mined or manufactured in Georgia. Atlanta became the temporary state capital in 1868 and the permanent capital in 1877, using its status as a railroad hub as incentive for the legislators to move the capitol from Milledgeville, Georgia. The Neoclassical marble Capitol on Washington Street, the work of Chicago architects Edbrooke and Burnham, was dedicated on July 4, 1889. The Fulton County courthouse (1914, A. Ten Eyck Brown, architect) and administration buildings (1930, Morgan and Dillon, architects; 1989, Rosser Fabrap) are located on Pryor Street.
