School Life and the Dairy

When I was very small, my father and two brothers bought a section of land in Midvalley and went out and built houses by putting up a wood frame and filling in the cracks with mud and sod.

When I started school in Enoch, they brought a covered wagon with a stove to pick up us kids through the valley. There were about 20 kids. In the winter, sleigh runners were put on the wagon. We went to school that way for four years.

My father gave the school board one acre of land about 50 yards from our home, and they built a one room school house. We went to school there for two years. Then the lightning struck and burned it to the ground, so we went to school in my Uncle William's adobe house.

We had to drum up our own recreation so we had mostly horse parties, sleigh rides, or wagon rides. It fell to our lot to furnish the horses as our horses were always well shod and grain fed, so I was generally the driver. Later in life, we built a Grade A dairy barn and bought cows and base. I sold my Grade A base and started to sell raw milk with two of my brothers,
