1. Helping Hands Marker

Inscription.

When this barn was built in 1920-21, the area around you was a dairy farm. Imagine acres of hay, rows of vegetables, and a herd of cows grazing in a pasture. Farm work was tough and needed a community. Neighbors helped each other to harvest hay and build barns.

• Farmers stored hay for winter feed on the main level.

• Stalls on the lower level housed horses and cows in winter.

• Teams of horses, and later tractors, pulled wagonloads of hay up the ramp and into the barn.

• The silo is gone, but the concrete circle next to the barn was its base. Silos hold silage—undried and compacted corn, grass, or alfalfa—to feed farm animals in winter.

Barn raisings showed community spirit during hard work.

Erected 2023 by Woodbury Heritage Society and the City of Woodbury.
