More about this memorial. According to the Elmhurst History Museum, this plaque was originally dedicated by the city of Elmhurst in 1987 at the corner of York Street and Park Avenue, not far from the museum itself about ½ a mile northeast of here. Four flagpoles surrounded this marker, and it was in a prominent location near the Elmhurst train station. However, in 1989 local veterans groups successfully lobbied to erect a larger veterans memorial in Wilder Park, which had more space for large gatherings and less noise from the railway. This plaque was one of several from around the city that were moved to
the new veterans memorial, which was officially dedicated in 1993.
