Inscription. Elmhurst College was founded in 1871 as an educational institution of the German Evangelical Synod of North America.

On October 17 1970, during the centennial homecoming, the national alumni association dedicated this marker to honor Elmhurst College founders.

Regarding Elmhurst College. Elmhurst College, set on 48 acres in suburban Chicago, was established in 1871 as a seminary and for training teachers, and classes were exclusively in German until 1917. In 1924, the school was renamed Elmhurst College, and in 2020 it became Elmhurst University.

This building was originally erected in 1878 as a dormitory, and has been used for many purposes over the ensuring century and a half.
