Near Rosendale in Ulster County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Welcome to Williams Lake
You are entering the planned redevelopment area for the Williams Lake Project (WLP), owned and operated by Hudson River Valley Resorts, LLC. The WLP is excited to provide public access to this privately owned section of the trail in collaboration with the Wallkill Valley Land Trust (WVLT) & the Open Space Institute (OSI). WVLT is a local not-for-profit serving southern Ulster County with over 1,600 acres in conservation easement, includ- ing the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail. OSI is a land conservation organization that protects scenic, natural and historic landscapes to provide public enjoyment, conserve habitat and sustain communities.
Access is currently provided under a temporary easement agreement, which will be made permanent in the near future. For the next 1.5 miles, we respectfully ask that you not leave the designated trail for any reason. The lands adjacent to the trail are private property and contain natural and man-made hazards. For your own safety, PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL.
For your enjoyment and interest, the WLP has provided interpretive signs along this section of the trail. Our goals are to create awareness of the area's sensitive ecology, unique geology and rich industrial history and to inform trail users of our future plans for the redevelopment of the former Williams Lake Hotel lands into a sustainable resort and residential community focused on wellness and outdoor recreation.
This 1.5 mile section of trail traverses some 779 acres of private lands, over 500 of which will be protected in "forever wild" conservancy. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, much of this area was home to one of America's greatest home- grown industries, the American Natural Cement industry. The remains of three of these natural cement mining and manufacturing operations are clearly evident adjacent to the trail. Many of these mines and building ruins are unstable and therefore pose a significant hazard. The abandoned mines now serve as critical habitat (hibernacula) for endangered bats. The WLP development plan protects bat habitat and will stabilize and restore the cement-era ruins. Again, please stay on the trail to help protect these sensitive natural and historic resources.
Enjoy the trail and please follow the rules outlined on the next panel and en courage others to do the same. Thank you and welcome again to the Williams Lake Project!
