Inscription. Named for Virginian William Patterson who, in 1835, purchased the Joseph Parish Spanish grant section of land on which the town now resides.

Believed to be the oldest community in Wayne County.

First Post Office established as Springville in 1848.

Site of Union Fort Benton built in 1861.

Site of the Battle of Patterson in 1863.

Birth place of Samuel Aaron Baker, b. 1874 d. 1933
Prominent Educator
Governor of Missouri 1925-1929.
 
Erected 2006 by Wayne County Historical Society.
