North Slope Oil Benefits All Of Us
Vignettes in History
| | Proud to be ALASKAN | |
ARCO discovered Prudhoe Bay, the nation's largest oil field, in 1968.
When work began on field development and construction of the trans Alaska pipeline, Fairbanks became the major construction and supply center for this immense and challenging project.
As Fairbanks' population grew, so did the benefits which accompany growth. New schools were built, transportation and communication facilities were expanded, streets and highways were improved, and the business community flourished.
Since beginning work on the North Slope, the producers, including ARCO, have demonstrated that oil development is compatible with wildlife and the environment. The Central Arctic Caribou herd, which uses the North Slope oil fields for its summer feeding and calving area, has more than tripled. Thousands of waterfowl continue to return to the fields each summer to nest and rear their young.
Now ARCO is operating two additional oil fields, the Kuparuk and Lisburne, with continued emphasis on protection of the natural habitat.
Just as North Slope oil has helped Fairbanks, the state of Alaska and the nation, so will development of other prospects in Alaska. These areas will play a key role in the energy future of Alaska and the nation.
Thank you, people of Fairbanks, for your participation in the development of northern Alaska's oil fields. You are the Golden Heart of a Great Land.
