1. Chaffey-Garcia House Marker
Inscription.
The city's second oldest house was built in 1874 by Joseph Garcia, a retired Portuguese sea captain, at what was then the intersection of the Santa Fe Trail and Mission Road. Sold to Etiwanda founder George B. Chaffey in 1831, it became the cornerstone of the Etiwanda townsite laid out by the Chaffey brothers. The first electric light west of the Rocky Mountains shone from this house in 1982 and it was also where the first long distance telephone call in California took place. The house was relocated from its previous location on April 24, 1985 due to the efforts of the Etiwanda Historical Society, Lewis Homes, the William Lyon Co. and the City of Rancho Cucamonga.

This house was rehabilitated and dedicated as a museum/residence on July 4, 1994 by the City of Rancho Cucamonga, the Etiwanda Historical Society and many other benefactors, in order to retain a valuable historic community resource.
Dennis L. Shout, Mayor.
