Hot, dirty, and dangerous work!

In the beginning, entrepreneurs provided the vision and funds, tradesmen provided talent as masons and blacksmiths, and enslaved persons provided labor to build the mill race and construct the buildings. Here the raw materials for manufacturing iron product were summoned together to make pig iron and horseshoes. This was a small beginning of what was to come later to the surrounding county in much larger operations.

Across the millrace was a water-powered merchant mill, first built in 1808 and then rebuilt after the Civil War. The mill survived here until the 1930's. During this later period the mill was run by a water-powered turbine and it used steel rollers, rather than mill stones, to grind grain.
