1. Come on In! Marker
In the early 1900s, many communities enforced laws that barred women from entering saloons. A growing number saw this as an injustice; others, like some saloon proprietors, saw it as a loss in sales. To work around these laws, entrepreneurs created family entrances, like this side door, where women could discretely order alcohol for takeout.
Today, the National Park Service operates this authentic gold rush-era saloon as a museum. Come inside, where knowledge is intoxicating!

[Right photo caption reads] This Mascot "family entrance" sign once hung outside, pointing to this door. The Mascot expected women (who made up roughly 25 percent of Skagway's population in the early 1900s) to know that this door was for them. Once inside, they had to go into a back room to buy alcohol.
