1. The Olmsted Family Marker
Inscription. Major Olmsted reported to the Binghamton Press in 1910 how his father and mother were active agents of the Underground Railroad and how their house was used to provide refuge for those who were passing through Binghamton. Olmsted described one episode in which, as a child, he remembered seeing people hiding in the woodshed chamber in their house. He was at first frightened until his mother explained that they were providing help to the people who were escaping the horrors of slavery and seeking refuge and liberty in Canada.
