The nearby Alaskan Hotel is the oldest operating hotel in Alaska. When its front doors swung open in 1913, the keys were attached to a balloon and sent skyward, symbolizing that the doors would always be open to guests. Structures uphill from it also date from Juneau's early days. Across the street from the hotel, a distinctive turret marks one of the city's best examples of Queen Anne architecture. Dating back to 1901, the building originally housed the Alaska Steam Laundry. By 1910, the thriving community also had twelve saloons, six department stores, three newspapers, three cigar stores, one brewery, and one glove factory.
