Lyman Hall
Born on Apr 12, 1724, on today's South Elm Street, and passing away on October 19, 1790, transcends the realm of his medical practice to become a vital but often overlooked figure in the American Revolution. A 1747 graduate of Yale College, his service to his fellowman started with his being a minister, a teacher and a medical doctor first in Stratfield, now Bridgeport, and then in Wallingford before joining a Puritan community first in Dorchester, South Carolina, and shortly thereafter in Sunbury, Georgia. He was soon a successful doctor, a wealthy rice planter, and became an early community leader. While serving as a delegate from Georgia to the Continental Congress, Hall not only signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776 but played a strategic role in aligning Georgia with the revolutionary cause. His impact extended beyond the signing ceremony, encompassing pivotal contributions to the drafting of Georgia's constitution, shaping the state's governance. Before his national role, Hall had also left his mark in Wallingford, where he established himself as a respected physician, contributing to local advancements in healthcare and education. Hall's commitment to education manifested in his instrumental role in founding Franklin College (now the University of Georgia), reflecting his belief in knowledge as a cornerstone of a flourishing society. In the tapestry of American history, Lyman Hall emerges as a multifaceted founding father, his legacy enduring through political acumen, dedication to liberty, and a vision for intellectual enlightenment.
