"Anything you can do, you can do with your head up."

–L. C. Richie, porter

Discriminatory working conditions and racial exploitation forced porters to work for tips to supplement their low wages. Nevertheless, porters took great pride in their work, seeing to their passengers' comfort and safety. Their slogan–"Service, not Servitude"–articulated their values as faithful, competent, hard-working men.
