Two Mile House
Two Mile House in the 18th & 19th Century
The Cumberland County Historical Society would like to acknowledge the peoples whose territories the land occupies: the Susquehannocks, the Lenape, also known as Delaware, and the Haudenosaunee, also called the Iroquois League or Six Nations. In 1793, Revolutionary War Commissary General Ephraim Blaine purchased 300 acres of land from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Two Mile House would not get its name until James Given purchased the property in the early 19th century and built a tavern in 1820. The tavern has been known by the James Given Tavern and the Two Mile House Tavern because it was conveniently situated two miles from Carlisle's downtown.
Two Mile House's Ownership
The Two Mile House property transferred hands many times and was parceled out to the 5-acre property it is today. In 1946, Joseph McLain King and Mary Wheeler King moved in. They resided at the property until Mrs. King's passing in 1992. Mrs. King gifted the house to the Cumberland County Historical Society with the request that the property stay open for public and private events.
