The Battle
You are standing at the location where the log house in the photograph stood on October 23, 1864. This and one other log house were located on the left side of the Confederate line. The Confederates were posted behind the two buildings and a line of high fences.

Col. Edward F. Winslow formed his brigade opposite the log house on the Union right. Col. John F. Philips' brigade was on the left. Colonel Winslow ordered the two brigades to charge up the hill on foot.

Confederate sharp shooters occupied the treetops, singling out officers with fatal effect. Colonel Winslow was struck in the left leg.

The Union attack was successful, though the enemy's lines were stubbornly held until the troops met, and the contest became hand to hand. Across the field for 160 yards, Union troops pressed the Confederates who withdrew in retreat.
