1. The Duck Creek Aqueduct Marker
Inscription.
This unique structure - a bridge for water - carries the canal across Duck Creek
Engineers designed this aqueduct (AH-kwuh-duckt) to carry the canal and boats above the creek.

Why would water need a bridge?
Canals rely on water that is completely level - otherwise the water would simply run downhill.

To keep the canal level across creeksand other dips in the land, engineers designed aqueducts like this one.

Floodwaters destroyed the original aqueduct in 1847. Engineers and construction teams replaced it with a covered Burr arch truss structure.

[Captions:]
This is the only known wooden covered aqueduct still operating in the United States. It's on the National Register of Historic Places and is a National Civil Engineering Landmark.

• Two floodgates on each side release extra water to keep the canal level.
