1. Skipjacks and Bugeyes Marker
Inscription. Photo circa 1928. Boats such as the skipjack, pictured here, and the bugeye, were developed specifically to dredge oysters from the Chesapeake Bay. A large, powerful boat with a sizable crew is needed for dredging. A skipjack is usually 40 to 50 feet in length and can haul two dredges at once. Power-dredging—dredging by motorized boats—was once prohibited in the Chesapeake Bay, but was allowed beginning in the 1990s. These changes in regulations were intended to increase the oyster harvest after years of decline due to over-harvested and pollution.
