1. Brewster: A Brief History.
Excerpt: Platted in 1888, the city began as a station on the Rock Island Railroad. It was named for Robert Brewster, a railroad foreman who helped lay tracks through the area. A few months after its platting, Brewster had a population of about 80 residents, mainly living in tents and sod houses. Brewster formed a school district in 1888, less than two months after the town was platted, and classes started Jan. 14, 1889. By 1909, the newspaper reported Brewster's population was 500, and the town had three general stores, a restaurant and lodging house, a hardware, implement and furniture store, a meat market, a grocery, bank, livery stable, men's clothing store, school and a hotel. In 1920, Brewster was incorporated as a second-class city, enabling it to issue bonds to build power lines to Colby.(Submitted on October 17, 2024, by Cosmos Mariner of Cape Canaveral, Florida.)
