Life Boat
Edwin H. Gott
This lifeboat was part of the safety equipment aboard the Edwin H. Gott, a 1,004-foot self-unloading bulk freighter, when it was built and launched from the Bay Shipbuilding Company in Sturgeon Bay in 1979. (Bay Shipbuilding is located just to your left and across the water.) In 1995, the ship went through a major update and received a longer self-unloading arm along withnew lifeboats. The Edwin H. Gott is still in service on the Great Lakes.
Watercraft America, Inc. of North Carolina built this lifeboat in 1978. It is an enclosed lifeboat with several windows and fireproof bulkheads. For the protection of those aboard, this motorized lifeboat has an air filter, rescue ropes, boat hooks, flare guns, a first aid kit, oars, and nearly 30 other safety items. The boat has a maximum capacity of 44 people. While other lifeboat styles - including open-top lifeboats - may have many supplies onboard, this lifeboat is specifically designed to remain dry inside and stay upright in heavy seas. It also has seat belts to keep passengers in place and safe from injury while enduring rough waters.
