Inscription.
Fishing was an important part
of Bucksport's economy for more than a century. In 1855. Bucksport had 20 vessels in the offshore cod fishery, bringing in more than 2 million pounds of fish that year.

The building behind you was the home of Captain Thomas Nicholson, the owner of a fleet of fishing and trading schooners. His spacious oak-panelled private office was fitted out as the captain's quarters on one of his vessels, with the dormer windows looking out over his waterfront "empire." At low tide, you can still see the remains of his wharf.

On September 23, 1898, the schooner AR THUR V.S. Wooduff, owned by Nicholson, with Capt. Peterson at the helm, arrived home from the Grand Banks off Newfound. land with a record-breaking catch. The Bucksport Herald reported: "The Wooduff fairly wallowed with her huge weight of [cod] fish. Every inch of space was crowded full and the skipper thinks he has close up to 5500 quintal (625,000 pounds], 400 or 500 quintal more than last year... The schooner was manned by a fine crew and fitted out in the usual complete manner of the Bucksport fleet. She carried 26 men all told and the same
