1. Chester Cornelius Hoff (1891-1998) Marker
Called Chet and Red during his playing days, he made his big-league debut with the New York Highlanders on September 6, 1911, as a left-handed pitcher. In his second time on the mound, he struck out future Hall of Famer Ty Cobb of the Detroit Tigers. He then played with the New York Yankees (formerly the Highlanders) through 1913, and spent 1914 in the minors. He returned to the majors in 1915 with the St. Louis Browns and had his finest season, going 2-2 with a 1.24 ERA in 11 games.
Prior to his professional career, Hoff had pitched for the semipro Ossining Colts of the Hudson River League. After his time in the majors he returned to the Colts, where he pitched semipro baseball on Sundays for 10 years, facing top Negro League teams as well as inmates of Sing Sing Prison inside the penitentiary walls. His full-time job was as a map cutter for Rand McNally & Company on the Ossining waterfront, from which he retired in 1956.

Regarding Chester Cornelius Hoff (1891-1998). Silas Simmons, a Negro Leagues pitcher/outfielder who played from 1911 to 1929, surpassed Hoff's record as the longest-lived ex-major leaguer in 2003. He was 111 years old when he died in 2006.
