Built around 1740 as a merchant's building. There has been a courthouse, children's shelter and public school here. Premises for Aker municipal cholera hospital, deaconess institute, and nursing home. Listed building.

The water level in Bjørvika was significantly higher 400 years ago, but towards the end of the 17th century the sea had receded so much that the stretch of Grønlandsleiret/Grønland became an important access road. This traffic is probably the reason why the facility was built.

The term "asylum", which means "place of refuge", has its background in the fact that in 1839-67 there was a children's shelter in the farm, i.e. that children of pre-school age from poor working-class families could be here while their parents worked, instead of them having to roam the streets and become "corrupt". both light work and play, and the children's shelters were in many ways an early special educational measure for children.

The writer Elias Kræmmer (Anthon B. Nilsen 1855-1936) lived here as a child when his mother was the administrator of the shelter. He has described the farm and the people in the novel "Asylet" (1928)…
