Inscription.
As the great granddaughter
of patent-medicine maker
Benjamin Brandreth,
Eleanor Brandreth Wunderlich descended from one of Ossining's leading
families. She lived all her 82 years in
the family home known as Boxwood, set
high on a knoll above the Hudson River.
After World War II, Eleanor graduated from the Parsons School of Design and studied watercolor at the Art Students League. Artistic talent ran in the family: Her father Courtenay Brandreth was a famous painter of birds. In 1948, she married Rudolf G. Wunderlich, a leading art dealer in Manhattan, and they had four sons.
Eleanor raised her family in Ossining and at Brandreth Lake in the Adirondacks, where she loved painting flowers and plants. As the boys grew older, she devoted herself to local civic causes, including the Ossining Woman's Club and the Ossining Restoration Committee, which saved the historic Jug Tavern in Sparta. Her tireless work with the Visiting Nurse Association of Ossining led to county and state roles in the field of at-home health care.
Art was Eleanor's second act. In the 1980s, she earned a teaching certificate in botanical illustration from the New York Botanical Garden, where she taught classes for 20 years. She began to show her work widely. Her book, Botanical Illustration in Watercolor, came out in 1991 and is considered a classic of the genre. She finished her last painting of a birch log in the Adirondacks three days before she passed away.
