1. Haggett's Garage Marker
The story of Haggett's garage is the story of the transition from horse-drawn travel to cars. In 1898, Haggett Bros. began selling hardware and plumbing services in Wiscasset. Livery stables were the center of transportation, and the Haggetts supplied their hardware. By 1910, there were cars in town, mostly those brought by wealthy summer visitors. The Haggetts saw opportunity. By 1911, they had added auto supplies to the hardware and plumbing business, and opened a second business, "Haggett's Garage (auto)", listed in the directory under Livery Stables.
World War I accelerated the popularity of automobiles. By 1920, state directories listed garages separately, but still listed livery stables. Wiscasset had "HAGGETT BROS. (auto), F. Burton Haggett, Proprietor." By 1930, the transition was complete. Haggett's Garage Co. offered sales, repair and service stations. Livery now appeared under Automobiles. At their peak, the Haggetts had two garages built back to back with one entrance on Middle Street and one on Water Street with easy access between them.
