1. Up the Street and Down Marker
The square where Townsend Avenue (originally Center Street) and Oak, Commercial, and McKown Streets meet has long been a commercial hub of the town. The first photo looks up Oak Street, circa 1890. On the left is the Izzy Reed millinery shop, now the library lawn. The white building in the right foreground is J.L. McCobb's Dry Goods store, built in 1880. Behind are C.E. Carlisle's Furniture, Hardware, and Undertaking and then the Boothbay Register office. The other photos offer views down Commercial Street. The lavish bunting and triumphal arch were part of a homecoming celebration for returning World War I veterans in October 1919. Festivities included a parade led by forty veterans in uniform, after which they and their ladies were served a turkey dinner in the Hall.
