The harbor water of Boothbay were traveled by Native Americans long before the establishment of a permanent European settlement here circa 1730. Since then, a multitude of diverse ships and boats have come to Boothbay to take on cargo or passengers, seek repairs or fuel, or to fish. In the decades after the Civil War, the increasing number of tourists to Boothbay fueled an avid interest in a different maritime pastime: pleasure boating. As early as 1870, the Boothbay Register reports a meeting of the Boothbay Yachting Association being held. In 1886, a "Great Yacht Race" was held for the "Boothbay Cup." Since that time, many eastern seaboard fleets have visited and a number of regattas have been held, including the one sponsored annually by the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club.
