Harrison Radiator Company
57 Canal Street
Lockport, NY
Harrison Radiator Company was founded on this site August 21, 1910, by English immigrant Herbert Champion Harrison. His invention, the Hexagon Honeycomb Radiator, was a vast improvement in early automotive cooling technology.
Three stone walls remain standing of the original Harrison Radiator production site. The structure's 1860s era red brick, cast iron faηade was removed during a 1930s enlargement.
In 1911, 131 radiators were produced at 57 Canal Street, followed by 2,245 in 1912. Expanding to larger facilities in the city, Harrison's flourishing enterprise would join General Motors in 1918. By 1925, Harrison's company had become the largest manufacturer of radiators in the world, producing nearly two million units a year. A global leader in heat transfer and air conditioning products, the legacy continues at today's Lockport General Motors plant.
The Covert Gear Company occupied 57 Canal Street from 1902-1910. Founder Byron Covert built the nation's first chainless automobiles here and would later invest in Harrison's enterprise.
