1. Fueling the Harbor Community marker
In 1891, Pal Pierce established a cool and wood business on the current site of the Ocean side Golf Resort, going into partnership with Herman Hartung in 1900. Local resident Lester Maddocks recalled, "Coal was brought in by barge; when a coal barge traveled east of the Cuckolds, it cost $2 more a ton for Pierce & Hartung. The stove wood came from Nova Scotia, all maple-Pierce & Hartung stipulated that." A hardware store, added to the company's holdings in 1911, stayed in business until the early 1980s. In the photo taken from the water, the yard's coal derrick dominates the skyline. Next on the waterfront was the Pickert sardine factory, which Pierce & Hartung later used for storage. The tall, white building on the right in the background is the east side grammar school.
