When the railroads came to Conway
In 1864, the White Mountains became more accessible to tourists when the Boston & Maine Railroad brought its lines into Conway. The grueling three-day stagecoach journey from Boston became an easy four-hour train trip, with summer visitors flocking to the area, eager to explore the rugged outdoors rugged outdoors.

Many local farmers earned extra income by welcoming these visitors to their homes, which were the first hotels in the region.

Summer 1895
Guests traveled by train, then stagecoach to the Carrigain House nearby - perhaps the most elegant tourist spot in the valley. Day trips to the gorge were a favorite pastime.

(captions)
Imagine balancing on a narrow log to cross the gorge as they did in the 1890s. A sturdy bridge now spans the rushing water.
