Embroiled in the European struggle against Napoleon, Britain seized U.S. ships involved in trading with France. British invasion forces were turned back at Baltimore and New Orleans, but not before the British had burned Washington, destroying many government buildings.

War was declared after the U.S. battleship "Maine" was blown up while docked, in Havana Harbor. The United States of America then supported Cuban forces fighting for freedom from Spain. Cuba was granted independence on December 10, 1898. U.S. acquired Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
