The Ranlett-Gould House

The Ranlett-Gould House. Thomaston, Maine. , The Ranlett-Gould House , The two matching formal rooms in the front of this house built in 1849 have wallpaper copied from a castle in England and made in Alsace-Lorraine. This wallpaper was also used in the Walsh house on Knox Street. Men came from France especially to hang the wallpaper in 1890. The paper remains in remarkably excellent condition with the colors still bright and vivid. All of the owners have made certain that the walls were subjected to only well-filtered light. On exceptionally bright days the interior shutters are frequently closed to prevent damage. , Capt. Ranlett, the first owner, has the distinction of being the first Thomaston sea captain to circumnavigate the globe in 1864-65. He sold the house to Hon. A. P. Gould, a local lawyer most noted for his explosive temper. It was Gould's son who had the wallpaper printed and installed., La Maison Ranlett-Gould , Le papier peint des deux salons de réception identiques, situés à l'entrée de cette maison construite en 1849, est une reproduction de ceux d'un château anglais imprimée en Alsace-Lorraine.
