Main Street in 1871. Thomaston, Maine. , Main Street , The view down Main Street was taken in 1871. Eventually, the elm trees grew until they formed a bower over the entire length of Main Street. Unfortunately, the trees had to be removed in the 1970s when they suffered from Dutch elm disease. When the wind blew in the wintertime, the branches rubbed against each other causing a loud clacking sound similar to that of a train speeding over tracks. Captain W. J. Tobey's house, shown below, has a mantel made of reverse painting that imitates the black marble that was quarried in Thomaston. This fireplace is very deep, open on two sides, heated two rooms with one efficient fire.
