A Case of Modern Technology
Before the famous fire of June 1915, the south side of Main Street housed a telegraph building to the west of Watts Hall. For some unknown reason, the telephone office was separate. Perhaps the telegraph office handled only telegrams and not the local telephones. In the 1990s, a lightning strike burned the steeple of the Thomaston Baptist Church. When the firemen were working to put the blaze out, one of them noticed that there was a "mess of wires" in the steeple. After some investigation, it was discovered that the telephone operators had a lever in their office that was attached to the wires in the steeple, more than a block away. When a fire was reported to them, they could pull the lever causing the striker to ring the bell in the church steeple. The bell chime summoned the volunteer firemen to duty.
