1. Uzal Knapp Gravesite Marker
Inscription. Buried on these grounds in 1856, Uzal Knapp was known in his lifetime as “The Last of the Life Guards,” an elite unit of men that protected General Washington during the Revolutionary War. In 1860, the marker was placed and his wife Abagail, whose death preceded her husband, was reinterred beside him. The claim of Knapp's service in the Guard has been disputed, and research in this area continues.
“His Excellency depends upon the Colonels for good Men, such as they can recommend for their sobriety, honesty, and good behaviour; he wishes them to be from five feet, eight Inches high, to five feet, ten Inches; handsomely and well made, and as there is nothing in his eyes more desirable, than Cleanliness in a Soldier, he desires that particular attention may be made, in the choice of such men, as are neat, and spruce.” – General Orders March 11, 1776 The Writings of George Washington from the Original Manuscript Sources, University of Virginia Library
