Inscription.  German:

of the Palatinate", Princess of the Palatinate, Duchess of Orléans

The daughter of Elector Karl I Ludwig experienced a carefree childhood in the Heidelberg main castle and Schwetzingen Castle from 1663 onwards. At the age of 19, she was married to Philippe I of Orléans, the brother of King Louis XIV, for reasons of state. With the death of her childless brother, the Palatinate-Simmer line died out. The Sun King, who held "Liselotte of the Palatinate" in high esteem, laid claim to the Electorate of the Palatinate - the Palatinate-Orléan War of Succession broke out. The entire territory and with it the castles of Heidelberg and Schwetzingen were devastated. Written records say that the Duchess of Orléans never got over this. "Madame" achieved posthumous fame with her several thousand letters. They are a valuable historical source and testify to her lifelong longing for the Electorate of the Palatinate. They also contain details about the appearance of Schwetzingen Castle and about the relationship with its resident Luise von Degenfeld.

the second wife of Monsieur Philippe I, Duke of Orléans (younger brother of Louis XIV of France). By Philippe, Liselotte was the mother of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, and Élisabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Lorraine. Philippe II was France's ruler during the Regency. Liselotte gained literary and historical importance primarily through preservation of her correspondence, which is of great cultural and historical value due to her sometimes very blunt descriptions of French court life and is today one of the best-known German-language texts of the Baroque period.
