1. Johann Wilhelm Marker
Inscription.  German:

Duke of Palatinate-Neuburg and Jülich-Berg

The so-called Palatinate-Orléan War of Succession brought devastation to the Electorate of the Palatinate in 1689 and 1693. Since Heidelberg Castle was destroyed, Elector Johann Wilhelm ruled from Düsseldorf Castle, the seat of the Duchies of Jülich-Berg and the main residence of the Electorate of the Palatinate's territorial association. Through the "Peace of Rijswijk", the Elector regained the Palatinate territories. Under the direction of Count Matteo Alberti and the Heidelberg architect Johann Adam Breunig, he had Schwetzingen Palace built as a baroque three-wing complex from 1710 onwards. With his second wife, Anna de Medici (1667-1743), who was also the last representative of her noble family, splendour and a love of music and painting came to the Electorate of the Palatinate. The marriage, which was concluded for reasons of state, developed into an extremely happy union, as evidenced by the two magnificent coats of arms of their noble houses, which flank the Schwetzingen Palace gate.
