Inscription.
The First School for Ellsworth Falls children was built in 1847. In 1874, the City of Ellsworth purchased the State Street property from John Lymburner and built a new school. This second school served local children until around 1960. It was later privately owned and used for storage until its demise in 1966. It was on this same property in 1857, that Swiss scientist Louis Agassiz examined an outcropping of schist of the Ellsworth Formation. He had been seeking evidence that glaciers once covered Maine. Agassiz concluded that the smooth surface with parallel scratches at this site was the result of glacial movement. He presented his findings at Harvard University. The schist outcropping remains visible near the road.
