Halifax's waterfront was a site of joy in 1945 as Canadians started arriving home from the war. The Queen Elizabeth, a luxury liner turned troopship, outran German U-boats to carry 750,000 troops back and forth across the sea. Not everyone returned home. Of the 1.1 million Canadians who served in the Army, Navy, and Air Force, nearly 45,000 were killed.
