1. Cockspur Hawthorn Marker

Inscription. This tree is a year-round favorite of gardeners with its profusion of white flower clusters in spring, orange leaves in autumn and colorful red fruit. In colonial times, it was trimmed as a hedge. Long, fierce thorns and interlacing twigs made it impenetrable. The fruits, or "haws," are a source of winter food for wildlife.
