Downtown in Indianapolis in Marion County, Indiana — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Black Lives Matter Mural
The murder of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020, sparked weeks of protests across the country, highlighting and calling for an end to the death of Black citizens at the hands of police officers, including recent deaths of Breonna Taylor in Louisville in March 2020, and Dreasjon Reed in Indianapolis only weeks earlier. Protests peaked May 29th and 30th in downtown Indianapolis, continuing for weeks afterward.
In July 2020, the City-County Council approved a resolution for the painting of a Black Lives Matter mural, selecting Indiana Avenue because of its history and importance as a center of Black life and art in Indianapolis. Organizers selected eighteen Black artists and activists to paint the mural.
Expansion and repaving of Indiana Avenue begun in October 2021 covered the mural. Small sections of each letters and symbols were preserved and presented to the artists.
