Shipbuilding in Ellsworth
Ellsworth, Maine

Transporting Ellsworth's lumber around the world required a successful combination of resources and ships to carry the cargo. Shipbuilding along the Ellsworth waterfront was bustling in the 1800's with numerous shipyards, wharves, sail lofts and a steam mill. The first vessel was built in 1773 by Benjamin Milliken, the largest was the 1,775 ton "Horizon," built in 1855. In 1853, 149 vessels were owned by Ellsworth concerns. By 1884, 92 vessels hailed from this port. The most common ship design was the two-masted schooner. This smaller vessel was comparatively easy to handle on Maine's rivers, harbors and tight waterways. Some vessels were built for fishing, but most were intended for international trade, carrying lumber, granite and ice to distant ports, as far away as the West Indies, Japan and India.
