The marble pedestal once had an astroble mounted on it, the sphere like scientific instrument which tracks the sun. At some point in time it was removed from the base and stored in the Museum's collection as it appeared to be missing pieces, possibly due to vandalism. The monument originally stood in the front (south) yard of the Museum, but was relocated when the underground parking lot was put there.
