Bucksport in Hancock County, Maine — The American Northeast (New England)
Bucksport Ferry Landing
This is the site where the Prospect to Bucksport Ferry operated from 1807 until 1931 when the Waldo/Hancock Bridge opened to the public for traffic. The ferry was an important transportation link between Waldo County and Hancock County transporting passengers, livestock, vehicles and goods from both sides of the Penobscot River.
The ferries used over the years were powered by many different means including hand sculling, wing power, and steam and gasoline engines. The site was owned by the State of Maine and the ferries were owned and operated by several private owners with Wendell Leach being the last.
