“M. le Maire fait remarquer au consel que BRAILLE, l’inventeur des procédés en relief pour l’instruction des jeunes aveugles a été inhumé dans les fosses communes. Le conseil municipal après en avoir délibéré considérant qu'il y a lieu de perpétuer le souvenir de ce grand homme, décide à l'unanimité que le terrain où reposent ses restes mortels serà affecté uniquement à la sépulture de cet homme célèbre et qu'aucune autre inhumation ne pourra y être faite.”

En 1952, un siècle après sa mort, la France, reconnaissant son génie créateur, lui ouvre les portes du Panthéon. Son corps y est transferè sauf ses mains, soigneusement misés dans une urne sur sa tombe cupressienne.
Sa tombe est la 3e dans la 6e rangée à gauche.
Louis Braille’s Tomb
Louis BRAILLE died on January 6, 1852 in Paris. He was buried in the cemetery of Coupvray, his native village.
“The Mayor has pointed out to the council that BRAILLE, the inventor of a tactile alphabet for the instruction of young blind people, was buried in the municipal cemetery. The municipal council, after having deliberated on the matter, has considered that it is appropriate to perpetuate the memory of this great man, and has unanimously decided that the land where his mortal remains lie will be used solely for the burial of this famous man and that no other burial may be made there.”

In 1952, a century after his death, France, recognizing his creative genius, opened the doors of the Pantheon to him. His body was transferred there except for his hands, carefully placed in an urn on his Cupressian tomb.
His tomb is the 3rd in the 6th row on the left.

3. Tombe de Louis Braille / Louis Braille’s Tomb
The lower plaque on the tomb notes that his body was exhumed and transferred to the Pantheon in Paris in June 1952. The inscription below the lower panel indicates that the space for his grave was granted in perpetuity by the municipal council on February 19, 1885.

The plaque on the front of the urn indicates that his hands are kept in the urn. The inscription on the top of the grave indicates that Louis Braille was born in Coupvray on January 4, 1809 and that he died in Paris on January 6, 1852; he was a professor at the Institution National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris; he invented a tactile system of writing for the blind.
