The first municipal waterworks in Nuremberg
Kaiserstraße 20/22

Nuremberg around 1850
The city is growing rapidly, around 50,000 people live here. The citizens get their water from a large number of individual wells. However, the drinking water is usually not perfect due to the numerous septic tanks in the streets.

In 1855, a cholera epidemic breaks out again in Nuremberg and many people die. The connection between water pollution and epidemics is now

known. The city council therefore wants to make water supply a public task.

On October 19, 1855, it decides: "to build a waterworks to supply the city with as much drinking water as possible, and in the event of a fire with sufficient water to extinguish it".

The new Schwabenmühle
The newly built Schwabenmühle pumping station takes water from three groundwater wells in the city moat and a well in the factory building.

Up to 10 liters of water were pumped out per second.

The water quality, however, remained a problem: in 1873 the wells were abandoned due to the severe contamination of their water and an 81 m deep artesian well was built in the factory building as a replacement.

In 1885 the city took the Schwabenmühle out of operation and relocated the drinking water production for Nuremberg to the Ursprungtal between Altdorf and Leinburg.

An air raid on January 2, 1945 reduced the building to rubble and ashes.
