Bayfield in Bayfield County, Wisconsin — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Sailor’s Delight
Pleasure boating grew hand-in-hand with boat clubs of the 1880s and 1890s. Regattas and other competitions fostered growth in small sailing craft on Lake Superior. The first sailing regatta at Bayfield in 1899 offered a $100 prize. Serious sailors today consider the Apostle Islands one of America's top sailing regions. Marinas in Bayheld and at Pikes Bay harbor 650 boat slips. Since 1979, Bayfield Race Week, held over the July Fourth holiday, has carried on that recreational sailing tradition with races throughout the Apostle Islands.
"All sailboats symbolize more than just travel - they promise adventure, escape and freedom. Your vessel is like an island, like each of the Apostles, an ecology of water; food and shelter."
Author Mike Link, 1988
