Mill Site. . , The Baldwin Dudley Pond, which is a portion of the Menunkatuck or West River, is the site of what was once the crossroads and center of commerce for this part of Guilford., Located here on the dammed up river were a Tannery, Bone Mill and Bark Mill, all associated with the tanning of leather. The property also contained a Grist Mill, a Horse Barn and Hog Pound. These mills all depended on water power for their operation and it is likely that there were two water wheels in use to drive the machinery associated with the production of grain and bone meal., This site thrived throughout the early 19th century, seeing wagonloads of goods coming and going daily. For perhaps a century this millpond produced considerable wealth for the Dudley family and was a center for all who lived and farmed in the region., The seven acre parcel on which the Historic Mill site resides is owned by the Town of Guilford, having received it as open space in an adjacent subdivision., Restoration and repair of the Dam and Buildings would be a momentous task and would pose many difficulties, if even possible. Environmental regulations, funding and concerns of property owners up and down the river would need to be addressed., If possible however, imagine visiting, walking through, or even working here in the 19th century.
