Fergus Falls in Otter Tail County, Minnesota — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Fergus Falls Woolen Mill
Organized in 1888, the Fergus Falls Woolen Mill reached an early peak by capitalizing on the 1896 Klondike Gold Rush by producing a tightly woven blanket called the Yukon.
Grand Forks investor Iver Boyum purchased the Mill in 1902 and in 1913 constructed a second mill near the south side intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Cascade Street. Made from locally produced brick, the new Fergus Falls Woolen Mill included storage for raw materials, finished products, manufacturing space, offices and a show room.
During World War I, the Fergus Falls Woolen Mill produced blankets for the government. In the Second World War it made yarn which was shipped off to other mills for weaving. After the war the Mill continued to produce a fine yarn and also blankets for hotels and resorts.
Milling operations ceased in 1964 and the building was torn down in 1985.
